April 11 at EMP: Rule of Law documentary and Thomas Mapfumo

Greetings, Fans of Human Rights and and Music in Zimbabwe,
Experience Music Project will host a screening of the documentary “Beatrice Mtetwa and the Rule of Law,” followed by a discussion of the film and a Concert & Reception featuring Thomas Mapfumo and The Blacks Unlimited.

Beatrice Mtetwa is a prominent Harare attorney who has defended many members of the opposition in Zimbabwe. A discussion following the film screening will feature the film’s Director, Lorie Conway; an overview of the Rule of Law Index findings for Zimbabwe by Juan Botero, Executive Director of the WJP; the Honorable Lyna N. Sarapai, a UW School of Law Barer Fellow from Kenya who will speak to the common legal challenges that citizens face in sub-Saharan Africa; and globally-renowned musician Thomas Mapfumo, in exile from Zimbabwe.

Capping the evening will be a Concert & Reception featuring Thomas Mapfumo and The Blacks Unlimited. Thomas Tafirenyika Mapfumo is known as “The Lion of Zimbabwe” and “Mukanya” for his immense popularity and for the political influence he wields through his music which is heard throughout the documentary.
