January Calendar for African Music Nites

Hi African Music Lovers,
A happy, peaceful and prosperous 2012 to you! Continuing our policy of reducing the number of shows we present while maintaining a high quality, we have scheduled only two shows for January – but save the date of February 19 for our 1st Anniversary celebration! Also, we want to let you know we are simplifying our name to the more easily remembered (we hope) name of “African Music Nites Consortium.” Come on out to Waid’s for some great food and music,
Claire and Shawna

January 8: Thione Diop and Yeke Yeke
Popular Senegalese percussionist Thione Diop helps bring in the New Year at Waid’s, accompanied by his hot West African drumming group Yeke Yeke and surprise guests. Come celebrate the recent release of Thione’s new CD, Mix of Africa.

January 22: Soyaya
West African music featuring Mohammed Shaibu on vocals, guitar and talking drum. Traditional and modern styles of Ghana, always with some new touches.

Looking ahead to February:
The African Music Nites Consortium celebrates its first anniversary with a special event on February 19 (President’s Day Weekend) 2012! Sponsored by a Smart Ventures grant from the City of Seattle Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs, we are offering free African dance workshops taught by Makeda Ebube and Manimou Camara, 3 – 5 pm, and a gala evening show featuring Eduardo Mendonça and members of Show Brazil followed by Roger Ocquaye and Spirit of Ojah. All events take place at Waid’s Haitian Cuisine and Lounge.
