On the Road with Razia Said Aug 17

African music lovers,
Sounds over Seattle presents Madagascar’s daughter Razia Said at the Royal Room August 17. Malagasy fusion reflecting the singer/songwriter’s nomadic life and multicultural background. Despite the use of upright bass and viola, the songs–by turns wistful, upbeat and personal–remain inexorably tethered to Madagascar.

Where: Royal Room, 5000 Rainier Ave S., Seattle
When: August 17, doors open 7 PM, Show 8:30 to 11:30 PM
Tickets by Eventbrite $20 in advance, $25 at the door
The Royal Room is all ages until 10 PM

Razia Said

Razia is a singer/songwriter/bandleader from Madagascar who has made her home in New York City. Razia Said’s nomadic life has taken her across Africa to France, Italy, Ibiza, Bali and New York City, but despite these wanderings, her heart and soul remains inexorably tethered to Madagascar, the land of her birth. Her musical explorations have also been wide ranging, and over the years Razia has experimented with French chanson, rock, jazz and even smooth, Sade-style R&B. But it took reaching back to her cultural roots for Razia to uncover her true artistic calling as one of African music’s most promising talents.

Cape Verdean Maestro Tcheka Feb 7

Crooked Trails and the Royal Room present Cape Verdean artist Tcheka!

Where: The Royal Room, 5000 Rainier Ave S, Seattle
When Doors open 7 PM Thursday Feb 7
Tickets $20 in advance, $25 at Door

Bio

Born Manuel Lopes Andrade, on the island of Santiago, Cape Verde, in 1973, Tcheka has created an unique and exquisite style that is a testament to the global influences he has embraced. His essence is impossible to grasp, let alone pin down – he is neither modernist, nor traditionalist, and his music resists any easy categorization or comparison. While referencing multiple genres from Cape Verde (batuku, funaná, finason, tabanka, morna and coladera), Tcheka’s music is also a busy intersection of Brazilian and African pop, traditional forms, folk, jazz, blues, rock, literature, anthropology and film. It is never just Cape Verdean, and it’s never just music, but it’s always captivating.

BKO Quintet from Bamako, Mali at Clock Out Lounge Sept 20

Hello African music lovers,
ALIA Prod, Crooked Trails/Sounds Over Seattle, and the Clock Out Lounge welcome the BKO Quintet from Bamako, Mali on their debut US tour:

When: Thursday, September 20 @ 8 PM
Where: Clock-Out Lounge, 4864 Beacon Ave. S. Seattle
Who: 21 and over
Tickets: $20 in advance, $25 at the door

BKO Quintet combines two distinct musical traditions of Mali into one seamless performance with an urban edge. The group was instigated by drummer Aymeric Krol and djembe player Ibrahima Sarr (Oumou Sangare). Aymeric credits Ibrahima with the idea to combine the sounds of the donsongoni (hunter’s harp) with the djelingoni (the harp of the griots). Breaking with centuries of tradition, BKO takes these two traditions and forges a new sound that speaks to modern day Mali.
